It started, like most of Rocky's best ideas, with a simple image hiding in plain sight — the absurd, timeless tension between something dangerous and something delightfully harmless. A crocodile and a rubber duck. Predator and bath toy. On the surface it's a joke. Look longer and it becomes something else entirely. The rubber duck doesn't flinch. Perched in the upper right corner, small and sunny yellow against the swirling chaos of drips, scrawls, and layered color, it holds its ground with a smile. Below, the croc opens wide — rows of white teeth, a mouth full of pink, a body rendered in thick, almost cartoonish strokes of lime green that somehow feel more alive than any photorealistic rendering ever could. Around them both, Rocky's signature 'beautiful mess' erupts: hot pinks bleed into slate blue, black roses bloom in the corners, and hand-lettered text announces the title like a fairytale gone wonderfully wrong. This is a painting about courage in absurd places. About the small, unbothered thing that refuses to be swallowed by the loud, threatening thing. Rocky painted it in 2022, but it feels like it could have been painted any day — any day you needed a reminder that sometimes the little yellow duck is exactly right to smile back.
